Lasers have become the standard treatment for tattoo removal because they offer a low risk, highly effective alternative with minimal side effects. Researchers have determined which wavelengths of light to use and how to deliver the laser's output to best remove tattoo ink.
Our Candela AlexLAZR treats a variety of tattoo pigments including black, blue, and green as well as other pigmented lesions like freckles, sun and age spots. The AlexLAZR's 755nm wavelength maximizes beam penetration providing optimal results in the treatment of deeper pigmented lesions like Nevus of Ota.
Lasers work by producing short pulses of intense light that pass harmlessly through the top layers of the skin to be selectively absorbed by the tattoo pigment. This laser energy causes the tattoo pigment to fragment into smaller particles that are then removed by the body's immune system.
More than one treatment, which actually only takes minutes, is usually needed to remove an entire tattoo. The number of sessions depends on the amount and type of ink used and how deeply it was injected. One month intervals between sessions are required to allow pigment residue to be absorbed by the body.
Following treatment, the doctor will apply an antibacterial ointment and dressing to the area, which should be kept clean with continued application of ointment as directed by your doctor. A shower or bath the day after treatment is okay, but the treatment area should not be scrubbed. Your skin might feel slightly sunburned for a couple of days and the treated area may remain red for a few weeks. The site might also form a scab, which should be handled gently. After healing, the site will gradually and continually fade.
Side effects of laser procedures are generally few but may include hyperpigmentation, or an abundance of color in the skin at the treatment site, and hypopigmentation, where the treated area lacks normal skin color.
It is important for the patient to discuss with the physician the various procedures, how they are performed, and the probable results. Care of the treated area must also be discussed.
Is it safe?
Yes. The Alexandrite laser we use is specifically designed for treating tattoos and hyper-pigmentation. It is a homogenous beam, meaning there are not hot spots and adverse affects are minimal. Unlike other techniques, laser tattoo removal treats without causing purpura, and the risk of scarring or changes in skin texture is greatly reduced.
Is the procedure painful?
Most people compare the laser to the feeling of having a rubber band snapped on your skin. However, for sensitive areas, we can apply a topical anesthetic.
What is my skin like after a treatment and what should I do?
You may experience some temporary reddening of the treated area and there may be some lightening or darkening of the skin for several months afterwards. Typically, your skin will return to normal, minus the tattoo, of course.
Immediately after a treatment, you can apply an ice pack or a topical anesthetic. Between visits, avoid scrubbing the area and you may want to cover it lightly with a bandage. Also, we will recommend a sunscreen for you to use over the treated area.
How long are treatments and how many will I need?
Depending on the size of the tattoo, treatments range from 5 to 30 minutes. Most people will need multiple treatments for the best possible outcome. Contact our office for a free consultation so can give you more detailed information on what you will need.
